It has a little more to go and then I have to find a frame. I am not good with the frame part. Any suggestions?

Hello all. I have been painting all sorts of things lately. This big oval box is one of a set of five that I am painting for the shop.

It took over 4 hours to paint.I listened to a book on tape while I painted it..... Inspector Kurt Wallandar by Henning Mankell, a Swedish crime writer.

I think some Swedishness came out of my paint brush while I painted it!

I love Bertold Loffler's work,especially the scalloped edges. He was a decorative artist best known for his ceramics, but I like his graphic art.I found his postcards in the book "Postcards of the Wiener Werkstatte" that my Son gave me for Christmas.

I made a whale box...the same size as the boxes I posted previously.

I left a space to personalize with a name or date, or I can fill it in with ships and waves.

Something for the fellas....fill it with cookies, candy or chocolate!

This is one of my favorite things in the shop....an old design, but I love it on this 9 -3/4 inch x 9 inch x 1- 1/2 inches.

You can fill mine with Laduree rose macaroons, please.

I just got back from the Printsource show in New York City. It is always so inspirational, although I wish that there were more designers doing hand painted designs instead of computer generated. While I was waiting for the train home, I grabbed a copy of the new British Country Living and sat down with the bunch of roses that I picked up for Mom,a rose macaron from Ladruee, and a glass of wine...I guess it should have been rose! Inside the Country Living was a wonderful article on Gudrun Sjoden.

Here are some of her clothing designs.

She really uses color so well.I think I'll try a bit more this year in my designs.

I love her patterns and how she mixes things.

Hello hello! Love is in the air, so I made another wedding cake topper just in time for Valentine's Day.

He is dressed in vintage blue cotton made from a little hand towel.She is dressed in vintage layered lace pieces that I have boxes and boxes of.

He has his Liberty of London tie on for the occasion. Lots of butterflies are attending.

They are holding a wee heart cut-out.

I lined the bottom of the stand with velvet flowers.

The Flower Faerie

This is the time of the year where I go through my studio and get rid of old magazines,old supplies and unearth all of the inspirational books that I use all year long for ideas. Here is one of my FAVORITE books.

Illustrations by Vladimir Vagin.

When a selfish emperor sees a beautiful faerie sleeping on a flower, he plucks the flower and brings the faerie back to his palace. But with the faerie imprisoned in a glass case, the fruits and flowers of the kingdom begin to wither and die.

Then the illustrations in the book turn to black and white until the Faerie is rescued and brings everything back to life, and all the illustrations back to color. Love it! You can get the book HERE. I'm off to create! TTFN !

Here is another with blue hydrangeas.

You can put the picture in vertically or horizontally with this frame.

The sides are painted with blue stripes.

Nantucket Festival Of Trees

I decorated my tree last week for the Festival Of Trees.

This year I used all shells that I had decorated.

They gave me a great spot, too!

The lighting wasen't the greatest, but here are some of the shells.

I found this and thought it would look fabulous painted with pretty flowers.The mirror is mottled, and gives it that vintage appeal. It would be easy to replace with a new one as well.

Amber Hind was also a speaker at the Petticoat Row function. She is one of those youngins that taught herself HTML language and all of THAT STUFF. We could hardly keep up with her! She has a web design service...Au Coeur Designs as well as a business for new and expecting Mothers called Papoose.

Petticoat Row Networking Night Out!

Petticoat Row is an organization that celebrates Women in business. This month, Jason Bridges from Nantucket By Bike was one of the speakers about Social Media. There was Jason and about 50 women ...we usually have female speakers, but tonight was different. I saw him devouring a glass of wine after he spoke.(Like the rest of us!) Jason runs Nantucket By Bike....what a great idea! I know him from Nantucket Bookworks where I used to work before I got my wee shop/studio. He always picked up interesting books, and we had great conversations about them.He decided to go for it and open his own business, and had to learn about how to promote it. Since he's a voracious reader, he read everything about social media promotion. So....he also has another business....Social Bridge Consulting (nice!) where he does social media consultation. WOW!

I love his site...I love the way he introduces his tour guides,too, right down to their favorite dishes.(just click the picture)
Amber Hinds also did a talk on social media connections. She is a twenty something wiz, and I will blog about her tomorrow.

Nantucket Christmas Ornaments

Hello, Mateys! Here are some new ornaments that I have been painting for the Nantucket Stroll event taking place December 2 through 4 right here in Nantucket.
Of course I can make them without the "Nantucket" part.
These are made from thin wooden cut outs. Check out his fine whale pants....available at Murray's if you'd like to get a pair! I have a friend who has mermaids embroidered on his....:):)
I will be working on some 3 d mermaid ornaments this week and I'll make sure to post them.

Pretty New Sea Shells

My friend, Karen from Wellfleet sent me another whole box of sea clam shells! We don't get them here on our Nantucket shores.
They are beautiful shells to work with.
So I'll be putting these up for sale soon in the shop.
But now I am off to the studio!
Looks like a windy week end here!

Floral Oyster Dishes

Aren't these swell? I just love them! I made the flowers out of papier mache but I think next time I will try to make them out of ceramic clay so that they can be used for salt and pepper dishes....with wee spoons!
I will use the short lull between now and Thanksgiving to make some!

Wedding Day For Eliza

Eliza is getting married here on Nantucket this weekend and here is what we've done. Table numbers in 5 x 7 frames.

An announcement at the entrance.I also made a place cards for each table in a different post card design.

Mermaid Shadow Box

I am creating two 10 x 10 shadow boxes for the Collaboration 2011 show at the Artist's Association here on the Island. The first one is a button tailed mermaid.
Jeffrey made me the boxes. All works submitted have to be 10 x 10. They are hung in grids all over the gallery.
I put part of my collection of heart rocks on the sandy shore. I'm finishing up the second one today! The show opens this Friday......I'll bring my camera! Thanks for looking! :)

All roses and hydrangea.
It's 16 inches long and 8 inches wide.
You could hang it up on the wall or let it sit on your bureau.

Hurricane Irene Nantucket

Well, here we go again! Big predictions. Lots of people leaving the Island. Who would have known that we'd have a beautiful sunny, albeit, windy day!
I put my commemorative Hurricane Irene shells in the window with a framed print.
Here is a new box....

I didn't open the shop . I walked around town a bit to see what was going on. A big branch down on Centre Street.
John and I took down our signs. The bank was all boarded up.
Some shops on Main Street are not taking any chances.

The Lion's Paw has a lot of windows! They boarded up and were closed for the day.
Look at that blue sky! You wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it here . The ocean was a howlin'! The biggest waves I have ever seen here. As of 3 pm, the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, and there is a lot of kindling to pick up tomorrow. I met some people who flew in on the last plane out of NYC yesterday.... good decision! The rest of the week is supposed to be beautiful.....I hope everyone who was actually in the hurricane is safe and sound.Onward we go....Thanks for looking!

A New Shelf

Sorry to have been away for so long. As I said....I am swamped! But it's starting to ease as I get those orders out. I have a new metal and glass shelf. Now I have 2 more shelves to fill!
Her is a lovely 3 step stool that I did for Claire as a special order. The first step is a mermaid surrounded by hydrangeas.
The second step is a whale swimming with the rainbow fleet around Brandt Point lighthouse.
And the last step is a Nantucket Lightship basket filled with flowers. Whew! Thanks for looking....I just got a shipment of wooden boxes to paint.....so stay tuned! Cheers....

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

I got these giant hand mirrors to paint. They are 16 inches long.
The mirror part is 8 inches by 9 inches....a serious mirror.
I call them my "Gulliver Mirrors". I was going to send them back, but I couldn't resist all that space to paint on!

Jeffrey made me the frames.

They are made of wood and come in small, medium and large sizes.
They are all different.

Fairy Festival

The Nantucket Lighthouse School is having a Garden Festival. Here is my donation for the auction.
It's a shadow box of Fairies having tea.There is the woodland Fairy and the Fluffy Fairy.
I made the fairies out of papier mache clay.
Then I added everything else! There will be Author Tracy Kane there to show everyone how to make fairy houses. What fun!
I used butterfly lace on the sides. Vintage flocked pansies and other buds adorn the forest.
Tea cups on top of an old broken mushroom Christmas ornament that I have been saving for years. Glad to have found it a home! Have fun at the Festival! Cherrio! :)

Beets For Supper

I've been buying all different colored beets at the farmers market. I have decided what to do with them....
I subscribe to Food52 news letter. They have great ideas and recipes ! Like these yummy beet greens in a sour cream dressing.
And this crumbly tart crust made a special way. It's from Paule Caillat and you can get the recipe here.
Now the question is....what to fill it with? I know where we can pick some blueberries.....:):) ( all of these photos from Food52)
And then all to do is add some beautiful flowers to the table and Supper is ready! (Flower photo from the wonderful Saipua) I hope you are enjoying your Summer!

Mermaid Signs

Hello all. Here I have some mermaid signs that I painted for the shop.
The mermaid is a transfer that I made from one of my drawings that I applied to a little wooden sign and handpainted all around it.
I haven't drilled the holes or put in ribbon for these yet.
But I will today!
The weekend was lovely....hope everybody on the Island had fun at the beach!

Painted Cans

I've wanted to paint cans for years, so now I've done it!
Yay! It's a great way to recycle and add a bit of fun to a table centerpiece. Just paint them white, or what ever color, put on designs with acrylic paint or decoupage with a favorite design, and finish with water based varnish....et voila!
I am going hunting for some bigger cans at the restaurants. Then I'll post a photo of them as a centerpiece! Have a great day and thanks for looking! :):)

Little Hand Painted Chair

I haven't quite finished this chair, but it's almost done.
A chair for a little person.
I like to use them for little bedside tables, too! Lots of butterflies!
I use my transfers for the butterflies and paint the rest by hand.
A little oval to put a special name.
I can do it while you wait!
I started the sides...have to cover every square inch!
This is the underside of the seat.
And the top again. I will be getting different styles of children's chairs coming soon....
I can't wait!

Little Hand Painted Stools

I'm smitten with these little stools that I found to paint.
The top is about 10 x 6 inches.
A perfect size for the wee ones!
I left a space at the bottom for a name or initials.
Right there....
They are fun to paint!
I did the same here....Name or initials in the oval.
They would be nice on a table for extra height,too.
Another chair almost finished for tomorrow's post.

Lovely Metal Urn

I've had this metal urn for a while and I finally painted it. Here's the top.
It's pretty big....about 14 inches high. Blue flowers on one side....
Pink roses on the other.
and wee flowers on the base.

I was looking at my weekly posts from Pikaland and found a website called work.place. Carlie Armstrong is a Portland Oregon based photographer who takes pictures of Artist's studios and posts them on this site. I found Andy Paiko, a glass blower and sculptor and his amazing creations.
